The University of Dundee is a British university located in Dundee, Scotland. Officially a university since 1967, it has about 18,000 students, including 5,500 postgraduates.
The university's origins go back to the university college originally based in Dundee and the University of St Andrews. With the development of Dundee in the 19th century and the influx of people, there was a growing need for a university in the city. In 1881, University College Dundee was established to "promote the education of people and develop the study of science, literature and the fine arts". This university college had no right to award degrees and for many years it only prepared students for the examinations taken at the University of London.
