Both a researcher and a teacher since 2000, Jean-Charles de Hemptinne teaches the course on refining thermodynamics at the Processes for energy and chemicals Center. He coordinates the "Thermodynamics applied to processes" teaching unit, sets up new courses for the off-site master programs and is the IFP School contact for the research-oriented Master program Catalysis and Processes. Professor at IFP School since 2009, he held the Chair on "Thermodynamics for biomass fuels" from 2010 to the end of 2019. Since 2021, he is the holder of the Chair on "Electrolyte thermodynamics modelling for the circular economy". He joined IFP Energies nouvelles in 1991 as a research engineer in the Thermodynamics division.
In addition, Jean-Charles is a member of several scientific societies, including the SFGP, where he led the Thermodynamics and Processes working group until 2014 and the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), where since 2021 he is the Vice-President of the "Thermodynamics and Transport Properties" working party.
He has organized several international scientific conferences "Thermodynamics 2007" and "InMoTher 2012", as well as 2021 ESAT. Jean-Charles is author or co-author of more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 3 IFP Energies nouvelles patents. He is the main author of the handbook entitled "How to select a thermodynamic model for process simulation: problem analysis in three steps".
Jean-Charles graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1985 with a Chemical Engineering degree. In 2000, he defended a doctoral thesis at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 on "Thermodynamic methods in Petroleum Engineering" to receive accreditation to supervise research.
